VOAProp is a freeware program, available via the Internet. In order to use it, you must have access to a WWV satellite receiver, or have one permanently connected to your computer with a cable. VOAProp is in the public domain. It is available via the Internet, and you can download and install it onto your PC, without charge. No registration is required. Technical Information Based on information from the Radio Amateurs’ Bulletin, December 1998 The program is divided into two parts. The main part of the program is a world map which shows the propagation, sunspot number (SSN) and sunspot times predicted for a particular month of the year. The graphical display shows the expected propagation to be expected from different parts of the world. It can also show the average expected signal strength from a given location at a given time. Underneath the world map there is a table of the hours of the day and frequency of the best signal to be received from different parts of the world. You can easily zoom into any part of the world by clicking the centre point on the map. The table of frequencies is shown to the right of the map. Note that the program will show the frequency and the time it will be received at any location by clicking on the frequency. The program has a built in updater. If the WWV satellite uplink gets an update, the program automatically downloads the new data via the internet. When the data has been downloaded the program updates itself. This takes about one hour per day. No re-entry is required to update the program, just a click of the “Check for Updates” button. The new version will be installed and the next time VOAProp is run it will use the new version. VOAProp can be used as an amateur radio beacon monitor. If your computer clock is accurate, the program displays icons on the map which show which beacon is currently transmitting, together with the expected received signal strength. This can help you make a quick assessment of which beacon is likely to be strongest at a particular time, if conditions are likely to be worse than predicted or better. You can define a minimum and maximum signal strength to be shown. Example usage: To see a typical day, enter the month and year, and press “Update” to see an hour of the day, and press “Update” to see a location, and press “Update”
