A portion on an inner surface of one of the transparent substrates is partially coated with a reflecting member to form a reflecting surface. In order to effectively utilize this apparatus, it is necessary to make the brightness of the illuminating apparatus as high as possible so as to obtain a high display quality. Conventionally, a back light (for example, a cold cathode lamp) is used as an illuminating apparatus. The brightness of the back light can be made high, thus the display quality can be improved. However, there are the following problems. The consumed power of the back light is large. The service life is short. The illuminating apparatus must be large-sized in accordance with the number of pixels. As a liquid crystal apparatus which solves these problems, a display apparatus is proposed in Japanese Unexamined Patent Publication No. 6-92003. In this liquid crystal apparatus, a reflecting film is formed on the outer surface of one of the transparent substrates, and both the reflecting film and the transparent substrate are sealed with a sealing member.
